TAKAYAMA CHASEN

DESCRIPTION

A Kubo Sabun chasen, made in the kazuho style, with curled bristles.

Kubo Sabun represents the 24th generation of chasen craftsmen in his family. He has devoted his life to the making of chasen. His craftsmanship has a long history and has been passed on from generation to generation.

His forefather was honoured to demonstrate the making of matcha whisks in the presence of the Emperor of Japan at the National Sports Meeting held in Nara.

Kazuho (数穂) = the style/type of whisk

It usually means a medium tine-count whisk (around 64–72 tines), considered an all-purpose shape that works for both thin matcha (usucha) and thicker matcha (koicha). It’s one of the most common traditional styles.

Production methods in the small village of Takayama have been perfected over 500 years. These Takayama Chasen are made entirely by hand by a renound chasen master Kubo Sabun from locally grown Japanese bamboo.

Chasen Care

Pre-soak in warm water before use, to soften the bamboo tines (or spikes).
