Tōryū-ryū” (東陽流) school style traditional Takayama chasen handmade by Kubo Sabun of Chikumeido (竹茗堂 久保左文).

Hand‑carved from a single piece of Japanese bamboo, with very fine, flexible tines designed to create smooth foam for usucha (thin matcha).

These whisks are known for extremely even tine spacing and precise shaping, which makes them responsive in the bowl and long‑lasting when cared for properly.

The style is tuned to the school’s preferred whisking technique and matcha texture. Dictating the proportions of the head and the unique the curvature of the tines.

Compared to generic whisks, this style has a slightly slimmer profile with a narrower handle and finer tips. The thin, elastic tine tips let you whisk quickly without needing much pressure, prioritising a silky mouthfeel and elegant foam over very large bubbles.

Care

Because it is a high‑end Takayama piece, it performs best with gentle “M” or zig‑zag motions and will usually outlast cheaper whisks if you fully soak the head in luke-warm water before use and let it dry on a stand.

As these are made from natural materials each piece is unique, if you would like to select your chasen please contact us: hello@michitea.nl and we will share images of the available chasen.

Made in Takayama, Nara, Japan.
